New Maruti Swift

Maruti's new Swift will be on Indian roads sometime in August 2011. The all-new Swift doesn't look very different from its predecessor, but that is intentional, according to Suzuki designers. The new Maruti Swift will however address those areas of the car which had come in for criticism earlier; viz. cramped rear quarters and not too generous boot.

Under the skin, it is an all-new platform, with the car having grown significantly in every dimension. The wheelbase is 50 mm longer, and the increase in length in 90 mm overall. The front track is 10 mm wider, while the rear track has grown by 5 mm. On the styling front, the differences are marginal, with the 'peeled-back' headlamps and tail lights stretched a little bit, and the tail lamps now have clear lenses instead of coloured ones previously. The silhouette is also unchanged, with the blacked-out A-pillar, and tapering slightly towards the rear.

The increase in length and track have contributed to making the interiors roomier, which is particularly welcome. The dashboard is an all-new design and looks quite modern. We hope Maruti engineers will look to improve the quality of the plastics though, which tended to rattle after a while in the earlier Swift.

Power for the new Swift will come from Maruti's familiar K-Series petrol engine, the K12M, and the Multijet diesel. The K12M has been revised with variable valve timing and produces slightly more power as a result, 92 PS, but the big gains are in fuel economy and emissions. The new Maruti Swift should be able to manage 13-15 kpl in the city with the a/c running.

Maruti Suzuki engineers claim the new car will be even more dynamically responsive and fun to drive. Given the sporty nature of the earlier model, this means things can only be better in the new Swift, sure to appeal to enthusiastic drivers.

The car will be launched shortly, with prices ranging between Rs 4.5 lakh to Rs 6.2 lakh, ex-showroom, depending on the variant. The earlier car was only available in two trim levels for the diesel model, but Maruti is considering a ZDi version of the new Swift, which will come with ABS, alloy wheels, airbags, integrated audio sytem, climate control and reverse parking sensors. Given the already crowded premium hatchback market, the new Swift has its work cut out, but there's absolutely no doubt that it could very soon be challenging for the top spot.
