Mercedes To Launch GLA 45 AMG on October 27

gla 45 amg india launch

Following on from the launch of the GLA-Class SUV last month, Mercedes-Benz India is now set to complete the GLA range by launching the hot 45 AMG performance edition.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG is powered by the same 355 PS turbocharged 4-cylinder engine which does duty in the CLA 45 AMG. It also shares the same 4 wheel drive system as the CLA-class. The GLA 45 AMG will really be in a class of one when it is launched in India, as there is no real competition to it in the premium/luxury compact SUV segment in the market.

The GLA 45 AMG will be fully-imported into India, and is likely to be priced from Rs 70 lakh onwards, ex-showroom.

Mercedes-Benz GLA India Launch on Sept 30

WHEN: End-2014 / Early 2015

HOW MUCH: Rs 26 - 32 lakh

ENGINES: 2.2-litre diesel, 2.0-litre petrol

The Mercedes-Benz GLA concept was launched at the Shanghai Motor show in April this year. The concept features a of futuristic flourishes which may not make it onto the production car, but make no mistake – this concept is as close to production ready as they come. We delve in for a closer look.

We’ve already gotten two of the four models on Mercedes’ next-generation car (NGC) platform in the form of the B-Class sports tourer and the A-Class premium hatchback. This will be followed by the CLA sedan, and then the GLA SUV. India, as indeed much of the world, is displaying a strong propensity for compact SUVs. These aren’t full-blown off-roaders, but rather cars with higher ground clearance, chunky styling, and sometimes all-wheel drive.

The GLA is actually a conventional car beneath the skin, sporting a transverse-engine, front-wheel drive layout (all-wheel drive, borrowed from the AMG version of the CLA, will also be offered). The prototype displayed in Shanghai used a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 211 PS, which is the same engine used in the CLA 250. However, a diesel version, sporting the same 2,143 cc diesel engine as the CLA 220 CDI, with 170 PS and 350 Nm, should be in the pipeline as well, especially for markets in Europe and India. Since the basic platform is the same, Mercedes also has the option of using the 1.6-litre turbo petrol, which produces 122 PS and 200 Nm, as found in the A- and B-Class.

The GLA measures 4,383 mm in length, which is just 2 mm less than the Audi Q3 overall, but it will likely have a longer wheelbase. Both the A-Class and B-Class sport 2,699 mm long wheelbase, which is actually longer than that of the Q3, which measures 2,603 mm. These dimensions give the strongest hint at what Mercedes-Benz wants to achieve with the GLA, given that the Q3 has been a runaway success in almost every market it is sold in.

The interiors of the GLA concept boast of heavily stylised accents on what is essentially the same template as used in the A-Class and B-Class, with the same three centre louvers for the AC, similarly shaped steering wheel, and a touchscreen infotainment system. Of course, the choice of colours and materials on the production car would be expectedly more sober.

mercedes gla side profile

Some bits and baubles previewed on the GLA concept, such as the projector headlamps (you can stream a movie from your smartphone on a blank wall), and the roof-mounted HD cameras, are unlikely to be offered on the production car. The heavily stylised mirrors are also likely to be toned down for the production version.

We expect to see what the ‘real’ GLA will look like, most probably at the Frankfurt Motor Show in October, or at the very latest in Geneva next year. The car will go on sale in Europe and North America in 2014, but Indian sales are likely to commence only after that. The new GLA will be a very significant model for Mercedes India. The company is currently working to double the production capacity at its Chakan plant from 10,000 units to 20,000 units.

Pricing will be key, and we expect the GLA to be in the range of Rs 26-32 lakhs. It will be more expensive than both the A-Class and the B-Class, and possibly slightly more expensive than the CLA as well. Expect an India market launch early in 2015, although Mercedes-Benz India insiders have hinted that an 2014 launch might just be a possibility.
