When: September 2016

How Much: Rs 4- 6 lakh

Engine: 1.3-litre diesel

Competition:  Mahinindra KUV100, Ford EcoSport

Maruti Suzuki recently showcased the Ignis at the 2016 Auto Expo. With the new Ignis, Indian auto major Maruti Suzuki will foray into the crossover segment.

Competing directly with the newly launched Mahindra KUV100 and the Ford EcoSport, the new Maruti Suzuki Ignis will be sotted above the Wagon R and Celerio bearing a price tag of Rs 4-6 lakh. Ignis was first showcased as the Suzuki iM-4 concept at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show and later unveiled at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show.

The Maruti Ignis will measure 3,700 mm in length, 1,660 mm in width, and 1,595 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2435mm and 180mm of ground clearance. The Maruti Suzuki Ignis will also get LED daytime running lights. The production version of the car borrows several design cues from its concept such as neatly chromed front fascia, chunky styling with flared wheel arches and jeweled headlamps. The vehicle also gets a clam-shell bonnet, and projector headlamps instead of LED units. The side profile is highlight by blacked out A and B pillars, power-foldable and adjustable ORVMs, pull-style door handles instead flush units, and a pair of 10-spoke, 16-inch aluminum wheels with 175/60 tyres.

On the inside, this sub-4 metre crossover looks quite sporty and spacious. The car gets a dual-tone interior theme with a dashboard with integrated touchscreen display and sporty orange highlights. Similar to the Baleno and Vitara Brezza, the top-end model of the crossover might be equipped with a SmartPlay system with Apple Carplay. It will also get a Bluetooth-enabled audio system, automatic climate control, regenerative braking, heated front seats and keyless entry with engine starter button.

With 5-seat configuration, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis will offer an ample legroom for the front and rear seat passengers. The foldable rear seats can be adjusted for 165mm extra legroom. The vehicle offers a boot space of 258-litres that can be extended up to 415-litres with the rear bench folded. The list of safety includes dual front, side and curtain airbags, ABS (anti-lock braking system), EBD (electronic brake-force distribution), ESP (electronic stability programme), hill descent control, hill-hold, lane departure warning, LED headlights and fog lamps, and automatic headlights with automatic leveling. The vehicle offers several storage areas for bottles, cell phones, etc.

Built on the same platform as Baleno this mini SUV will be manufactured in India with high-level of localization. The company might also export the vehicle to other Middle East Asian countries. The Maruti Suzuki Ignis will be sold via the company’s premium Nexa dealerships. The Maruti Suzuki ignis crossover will be offered with a choice of 8 exterior colour options.
