WHEN: April 11, 2013

HOW MUCH: Rs 5.8 - 7.5 lakh

ENGINES: 1.2-litre petrol, 1.5-litre diesel

COMPETITION: Maruti Swift Dzire, Toyota Etios

Honda’s new Brio-based compact sedan, the Amaze, will be launched in India on April 11. The new Honda Amaze is a significant model for Honda, as it will debut the Japanese company’s first diesel engine in this market.

Honda Car India has lost market share over the last couple of years for a number of reasons, including production constraints, high prices and poor sales experience, but the biggest contributor to the company’s downturn in fortune is the unavailability of a diesel engine option. Recognising this factor, the company has worked hard to develop its new 1.5-litre diesel engine for this market.

New 1.5-litre diesel motor is derived from Honda's 1.6 i-DTEC pictured here.

Dubbed the 1.5 i-DTEC, this motor is based on the company’s new 1.6-litre i-DTEC as sold in Europe, but with a reduced bore or stroke to meet the cubic capacity requirements to qualify for excise benefit in the Indian context. The exact technical specifications are not known, but this is a high-tech motor, boasting twin camshafts and 16 valves.

While this motor will debut in the Amaze, it will also be offered in the Brio hatchback, and possibly even the popular City mid-size sedan at a later date.

The Amaze boasts of a longer wheelbase compared to the Brio hatchback, and this will have liberated more interior space. The company is confident that the Honda Amaze sedan will offer more to the consumer than the present segment champion, the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire. However, pricing will play a key role in determining the model’s success, and Honda will have to resist charging a huge premium, as has been the case in the past. A starting price of around 6 lakh rupees is expected, but the company claims customers will be ‘surprised’ by the price.

All will be revealed on April 11, when the car will be officially launched. But this might finally be Honda’s chance to win back market share in the competitive Indian market.
