Ford has recently taken the wraps off the new Ford Mustang, which will go on sale in April 2014 in Europe, exactly 50 years after the original. The new Mustang is part of Ford’s ‘One Ford’ global model programme, which will see 25 new launches from the Blue Oval over the next five years.

But what’s critically different about the new Mustang is that is not a ‘global’ car model; instead, it will continue to be the heartbeat of what defines an American muscle car, and instead will be adapted to meet homologation requirements in different markets. Crucially, it will continue to be built in America at the Flat Rock assembly plant.

Speaking about the new Ford Mustang, Raj Nair, Vice President, Global Product Development, Ford Group, said, “Ford Mustang inspires passion like no other car. The visceral look, sound and performance of Mustang resonate with people, even if they’ve never driven one. Mustang is definitely more than just a car – it is the heart and soul of Ford.”

From the styling perspective, the new avatar remains unmistakably a Mustang, with similar proportions, fastback styling, ‘shark-bite’ front styling, three-bar tail lights and wide rectangular front grille.

On the inside, the American car maker has stuck to the double wing dashboard design, but with a more contemporary feel and finish. One can find a large 8-inch touchscreen placed right in the middle of the dashboard, and the new Mustang also gets Ford’s SYNC voice-activated technology. Even till date, the Mustang remains truly a 2+2 seater, with the rear jumpseats.

Ford has said that both the hardtop and convertible versions of the Mustang will go on sale simultaneously. The company has also stated that in order to meet the exacting handling demands, particularly of European customers, Ford has done away with the live rear axle for the first time in the Mustang’s career. Instead, the new Mustang gets independent rear suspension, with aluminium knuckles and locating arms for lower unsprung weight.

The front double ball joint MacPherson strut suspension has also been optimised for better control and cornering prowess. Nineteen-inch wheels are standard on the new Mustang, as is a special performance brake package with large discs.

Three different engines will be offered with the new Mustang, which include a naturally aspirated 3.7-litre V6, producing an identical 309 PS, and a 5.0-litre V8 of course, with 426 PS. Ford’s engineers have also included a new 2.3-litre EcoBoost (309 PS and 407 Nm) engine in the line-up. Six-speed automatic and manual transmissions will be offered, with the option of shift paddles on the steering wheel with the automatic.

Ford will also make a right-hand drive version for the UK market, and it is possible that this version could be offered in other RHD markets as well, including Japan, Australia, Malaysia and India.
