ChevroletTrax

WHEN: Late 2017

HOW MUCH: Rs 10 – 14 lakh

ENGINES: 1.4-litre turbo petrol, 1.7-litre turbo diesel

COMPETITION: Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano, Mahindra XUV 500

Chevrolet is presently working on the Trax compact SUV for the Indian market. The compact SUV segment is truly booming in India, and the Chevrolet Trax stacks up perfectly against rivals like the successful Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport.

Powering the Trax will be the same 1.4-litre turbo-petrol that does duty in the Chevrolet Sonic sedan, although the diesel variant will get a 1.7-litre powerplant. Alternatively, Chevrolet could possibly use the larger 2.0-litre diesel engine from the Cruze into the Indian-built Trax. However, this is only speculative as our sources within GM India could not confirm which diesel engine will ultimately power the Trax. There's also the possibility of the 1.3-litre diesel, which currently powers the Sail and Sail U-VA, as well as the Enjoy MPV, being massaged to power this compact SUV.

The Chevrolet Trax is set to hit the Indian shores towards the end of 2017. Prices are speculative at present but expect the Trax prices starting north of the Rs 10 lakh mark. The top-end variants will be pricier than either the Duster or EcoSport, but would be similar to what Hyundai is planning with its Tucson SUV. Chevrolet will not offer too many variants with the Trax, and it is possible that the company might offer just two trim levels with either engine, making for a total of just 4 variants.
