ENGINES: 4-cylinder 2-litre TwinPower turbo diesel engine that produces 190PS and 400Nm and 6-cylinder 3-litre TwinPower turbo diesel churning 258 PS and 559Nm

COMPETITION: Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz M-Class

German luxury auto manufacturer BMW is gearing up to launch the revised BMW X3 in India by the middle of 2014. The BMW X3 is not an all-new car; instead, it is a mid-cycle refresh of what is already recognised as one of the most capable and versatile luxury cars on Indian roads.

The decision to launch the refreshed BMW X3 comes at a time when the mid-size SUV has been a strong seller for the German carmaker with global sales in excess of 1.5 lakh units in the last calendar year, registering a growth of 5 per cent in comparison to sales achieved in 2012.

Changes on the exterior of the updated BMW X3 will include a redesigned headlight, refreshed front and rear bumpers and a new surround for the kidney grille. Barring the 1mm increase in length which now stands at 4657mm, the remaining external dimensions of the 2014 BMW X3 have remain unchanged. The refreshed BMW X3 is 2089mm wide, 1678mm high, with a wheelbase of 2810mm. Boot space too has been kept unaltered at 550 litres with the rear seats up, going up to 1,600 litres with the bench folded back.

Take a sneak peek inside and you would notice some subtle tweaks such as a restyled centre console, additional chrome detailing, new cupholders and a standard-fit leather steering wheel. More options of exterior colours scheme, upholstery designs and new alloy wheels will also be on offer in the 2014 BMW X3.

The refreshed BMW X3 will also be equipped with a host of new driver assistance and infotainment features including an uprated navigation system that has an integrated touchpad on the iDrive controller. Other interesting updates include a head-up display, a high-beam headlight assistant and an automatic parking assistant.

However, the most important and noticeable change has been made under the bonnet with the latest-generation turbodiesel engines promising increased power output and better mileage than the outgoing model. The rear-wheel driven BMW X3 sDrive18d will be powered by a 4-cylinder 2-litre TwinPower turbo diesel engine that produces 150PS and 360Nm. Three other diesel trims come with all-wheel drive as standard. The BMW X3 xDrive20d produces 190PS and 400Nm. The BMW X3 xDrive30d is powered by BMW’s inline 6-cylinder 3-litre TwinPower turbo diesel engine that churns out 258 PS and 559Nm. In the top-of-the-line BMW X3 xDrive35d, the same inline 6-cylinder 3-litre TwinPower turbo diesel puts out 313 PS and 630Nm. The new BMW X3 will be available with a 6-speed manual transmission or 8-speed automatic gearbox, depending on the chosen engine. Although the European markets are expected to get all the above mentioned variants, however, India is likely to receive the xDrive20d and the  X3 xDrive30d.

The updated BMW X3 is expected to hit Indian road by August 2014.

New X3 launch in end-August

new BMW X3 India launch on Aug 24

WHEN: August, 2011

HOW MUCH: Rs 45-55 lakh

ENGINES: 2.0-litre 185 PS diesel, 3.0-litre 260 PS diesel, 3.0-litre 260 PS petrol

COMPETITION: Audi Q5, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

This is the new BMW X3, slated to go on sale by the end of this month. The new X3 is based on the 3 Series touring station wagon, and utilises a monocoque construction.

The new X3 is offered with a range of four engines, two diesel and two petrol, but in India, only a single petrol version is likely to be offered, alongside the two diesels. The base engine is the familiar two-litre diesel, pumping out 185PS, just about adequate for the 1.8-tonne kerb weight. The 3.0-litre diesel produces a more substantial 260 PS, along with a fat slab of torque.

BMW may consider the 3.0-litre petrol motor as well, which also produces 260 PS. The new twin-turbo 3.0-litre petrol, which produces 310 PS, is unlikely to be offered in India at launch.

All the engines are mated to BMW’s new 8-speed Steptronic gearbox, and come with four-wheel drive as standard. An electro-mechanical clutch apportions torque on a real-time basis to the wheels with the most traction in any situation.

The X3 also has BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, aimed at reducing emissions and boosting fuel efficiency. The new X3 uses electric power steering, and an alternator which disconnects when not required, to reduce the load on the engine, thus boosting efficiency.

All versions of the X3 comes with a full suite of electronic driver aids, including stability control, hill descent control, cornering braking control, traction control and dynamic damper control, to ensure the driver retains control no matter of the conditions. Six airbags add to the sense of security in case of any mishap.

The driver also benefits from features like adaptive cornering headlights, a revrsing camera and BMW’s head-up display, which shows the driver important information without him having to change his line of sight.

The new X3 will be launched in India on August 24. Pricing will be in the range of Rs 45 – 55 lakh, with the two-litre diesel being the cheapest version.
