Heavy rains bring several dangers. Not only there is high chance of flood but also the roads often turn out as death traps for vehicles and their occupants. Slippery road is a natural outcome of heavy rain. It is needless to say that such thoroughfares often prove to be dangerous to ply upon. Moreover, low visibility and a slew of other external factors remain firmly seated remain outside of the driver’s control during this time. As a consequence, the monsoon season generally witness a significant rise in road mishaps. Slow and safe driving, suitable and regular vehicle upkeep and a general amount of pre-monsoon preparedness no doubt helps getting away with such fatal outcomes. Vehicle owners should strictly stick to a few simple precautions while coming out with their vehicles during the rainy season.

Some monsoon vehicle check-ups that need due care specifically include examining the vehicle before operating it after overnight parking. Drivers should have a quick yet minute look at the car both externally and internally, before stepping up the full speed. This simple precautionary step helps in identifying any leakage that would have trickled down overnight, and simultaneously also get a notion of tyre inflation and air pressure. Another simple step is to ensure that the coolant level in surge tank (plastic reservoir), the brake fluid level and water level in the wind shield washer reservoir are adequate.

One should follow the below steps to ensure safe and pleasant driving during monsoon:

  1. Examine the vehicle before starting it especially after overnight parking: This would bring to your notice and make you aware of any leakages that would have trickled down overnight. It also provides the driver with an impression about the condition of tyre inflation and tyre air pressure.
  2. Check coolant level in surge tank (plastic reservoir)
  3. Check water level in wind shield washer reservoir; use clean water as per need.
  4. Check brake fluid level.
  5. Check for proper operation of wipers.
  6. Check the condition of wiper blades. It should wipe the windshield/glass clean properly,
  7. Always use parking brakes during vehicle parking and holding vehicles on incline road if the vehicle is stuck.
  8. Ensure the reverse light turns on when engaging reverse gear, especially in conditions of poor visibility during monsoons.
  9. Slow Down in Rain/Fog
  10. Turn on the rear defogger.
  11. Use parking lamps during the day if it is cloudy and dark.
  12. Check for proper operation of Headlights including upper/dipper.
  13. Clean and active tail lamps ensure that the trailing vehicle notices, helping to avoid collision.
  14. While parking in a hilly terrain, drivers should utilise parking brakes especially during rainy season. Applying of handbrake is a must while on gradients as it ensures that the car is still. Thoroughfares in hilly terrains general become soft and this simple yet crucial step will guarantee the safety of the vehicle during parking in such zones.

Though not associated with safeguarding the vehicle against possible accidents, it is suggested that drivers should carry essentials like a valid driving license, insurance and registration papers, and PUC receipts in the vehicle. Moreover, car occupants should also keep emergency help-line numbers for on-road assistance, carry an emergency First Aid kit, a water container handy for multi-purpose use like wind shield cleaning or toping up coolant in case of leakage.
