The Scorpio is overall grand MUV and carries the capability to conquer any terrain. It is not only powerful but comfortable too. Its accessories and the spacious inside are quite praiseworthy.

Mahindra Scorpio is a dream car. It gives me opportunity to go on long drives with family and friends. Equipped with enough space and sitting comfort it ensures ultimate driving pleasure. Moreover, its fuel consumption level is also praiseworthy. It offers around 10km/litre in and around the city while it touches around 15km on smooth highways.

When given 12.5 lakhs to buy a sofa you would pick up something that is best available in the market or get one made of rosewood. Even I did that, but though my sofa did not come in leather, it did have a Bluetooth with 2 din music system, reading lights, cup holder, air conditioner, cruise control… wait a minute ‘cruise control’ on a sofa!!! Sounds like a car right. Well that’s what exactly happened, I bought myself a 2.5 ton sofa on wheels… I bought a Mahindra Scorpio. W After years of snuggling in their Commanders and the most successful 540s Anand Mahindra wanted to bring the company to higher standards. Bring something out of the blue to the people. This was the time when the Mitsubishi Pajero was a favourite import and most desirable SUV of everyone. Anand Mahindra, who had just joined in to carry on with his father’s legacy introduced to the world the Mahindra Armada which later led to the foundation of India’s first home bred SUV called the Mahindra Bolero. Anand being a visionary took that one step further and introduced in the summer of 2002 the Mahindra Scorpio. So successful that it is one of India’s largest exported vehicles. Since its introduction in 2002, the Scorpio has evolved from a lean subtle machine to a mighty muscular beast, with body work seemed chiselled by the Greek Gods themselves. Powered by a 2.2 mHawk turbocharged common rail diesel engine the beast delivers over 120hp at 4000rpm, making sure nothing else will stand in its path. The 5 speed manual gearbox delivers enough torque to set in motion the 16 inch wheel s from a standstill to 60kms/hr in just 5.7 seconds. Beware the 12inch front disc brakes can stop this beast cursing at 100kms/hr to 0 in just 48ft. With a 60ltrs fuel tank capacity and a mileage varying at 10kms/litres in the city to 15kms/litres on the highway you can take your Scorpio on long drives and with a 180 mm ground clearance even explore the off-roads. With the Micro Hybrid feature in the VLX model one can get a better fuel efficiency as it switches off the internal combustion when at ideal stance and restarts by a light touch on the clutch. The VLX model also comes with cruise control, voice assist, audio controls on steering wheel, rain and light sensors, tyretronics, intelligent parking system, ABS and an option of 4X4, Automatic gearbox and Air bags. When you look at the Scorpio it seems as a gift from the Gods, chiselled body work is seen right up front on the front bumper. The Sabre Tooth front grill gives it a very aggressive and distinctive look. The high model VLX Scorpio comes with ‘Blue Vision’ lights which helps to ease the night drive and makes the vehicle look more robust. The two tone exterior (except white) enhances the overall boldness of the vehicle. The air scoop in on the bonnet feeds the turbo charged engine enough air to give you a sudden rush of adrenalin. The tall tower lamps at the rear cover the rear pillars and the door handles are chunky enough to fill your hands. The moment you enter in the Scorpio it welcomes you with its enormous space and two tone interiors. The air conditioning is good enough for a vehicle this size and one can install the optional additional air vents if needed. The vehicle comes with power windows, power steering, rear wiper, rear defogger, follow me home lights, central locking, a mobile charging port and the fuel lid can be opened by a simple push of a button on the central console. Besides the chunky gear knob the boot when folded can carry 6mths supply of food water and luggage. And just in case you are carrying a bit more you can always use the roof ski racks to put your luggage together. The rear seats can also be folded to give more room for a variety of uses. The quality of plastic used is somehow not as one would expect after gawking at the exteriors. The fit and finish could have been better. Though the central console is very neat and simple with the stereo below the ac vents followed by the varied six buttons the fake wood gives away that feeling of awe. The cup holders occupy either side of the gear stick and the outside rear view mirrors are electronically controlled. The Scorpio is available in 24 different variants, including the lesser powered M2Di engine or the powerful mHawk with either in BSIII or BSIV arrangements. And if one has great plans of camping in the wild opens then they can go in for the Scorpio Getaway with a CRDe engine. Though the 4X4 is available only in the VLX model, people buying the lower models may not hesitate to take their beasts off the road and take a detour for a little soft off-road fun. ‐ Vrikpal
