Volvo Auto India has launched three new variants, one each of the S60 and S80 sedans, and the XC60 SUV, all powered by a new 5-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, designated D3. This 2.0-litre diesel engine is a scaled-down version of the 2.5-litre D4 unit which powers Volvo’s range of cars and SUVs. The Volvo D3 diesel produces 165 PS and 400 Nm of torque, which is more than sufficient for the S60, S80 and XC60, although it would feel a bit underpowered in the bigger seven-seat XC90.
Mileage figures with the smaller engine are impressive, and Volvo claims figures of 18.5 kpl, 17.8 kpl and 14.7 kpl for the S60, S80 and XC60 respectively. Pricing is extremely competitive too, with the D3 powered cars priced at Rs 23.99 lakh, Rs 31.99 lakh and Rs 33.99 lakh. These are introductory prices however, and are set to increase by between Rs 70,000 – 1 lakh within a month or so. Still, these prices are a good Rs 6 lakh cheaper. Combined with the lower tax and insurance, and better fuel economy, the D3 series should improve sales of Volvo vehicles. The D3-powered range of Volvo cars and SUVs goes on sale all over India immediately.
Mr. Tomas Ernberg, Managing Director, Volvo Auto India said, “In light of changing customer and market dynamics, Volvo has launched its most successful global models in the last two years for the Indian customers. Launch of D3 variants reiterates our long-term commitment of a more human-oriented approach called ‘Designed Around You’, where we continue making safe, technologically-advanced and Scandinavian designed cars around customers.”
