The starter motor of the old Tata Nano cars will be replaced and installed with the one that’s fitted in the new 2012 edition as told by a company spokesperson. The replacement is not being done due to any safety reasons and will be done totally to all customers free of cost.
"We have devised a better starter motor and so we are upgrading it in our old Nanos for improved performance. We have not received any complaint for this and this is not a recall," said the Tata Motors spokesperson.
The spokesman did not disclose the cost of expenditure to be borne by company on this account, saying that it was "immaterial". However, according to various media reports the replacement is estimated to cost Tata Motors approximately Rs 110 crore.
Around 1.40 lakh Nano owners are to bring their cars for change of the starter motor. It is hailed as the biggest-ever replacement exercise in the history of the Indian automobile industry.
Before this, Market leader Maruti Suzuki India's call to replace the fuel pump gasket of one lakh units of its A-Star hatchback (in the year 2009) was the biggest. It was done to check a possible fuel leakage problem.
