BMW has taken the wraps off its new M6, in both Coupe ann Convertible versions. BMW's M Division is responsible for the sporty versions of the new 6 Series which was launched last year. Unlike the tamer versions of the of the new 6 Series, the M6 gets a fire-breathing twin-turbo V8 engine, mated to a 7-speed, dual-clutch gearbox.
The specifications tell the story of just what the latest 'M'onster is capable of: 570 PS of power and a scarcely believable 680 Nm of twisting force catapult the almost two-tonne M6 to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds (Coupe) and 4.3 seconds (Convertible). More importantly, this engine, called TwinPower by BMW, produces its maximum torque at a very low 1500 rpm, which ensures instantaneous response at almost any speed in any gear. The previous M6 embarrassed many exotic supercars, and this time around, it is no different.
The M6 sends the power of the TwinPower engine to the rear wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and an Active M-Differential, which ensures maximum traction at all times. Directional Stability Control, Launch Control and specially developed Dynamic Damper Control ensure that things rmeain ship-shape even when the driver gets lairy with the throttle.
Now that you know what's under the bonnet, let us tell you aboutt he rest of the package, which includes new front and rear bumpers with built-in aerodynamic elements, discreet 'M' badging, a two-slatted front grille, side skirts, twin exhausts and special forged, light-alloy wheels. 19-inch rims are standard, but customers can opt for 20-inch rims if they like.
Of course, since it is a luxury sporting GT (don't let anybody tell you otherwise), it comes loaded with leather seats, Night Vision, reverse camera, Surround View, dual-zone climate control, head-up display, smart phone integration for the infotainment system and apps for receiving web radio and using Facebook and Twitter!
Did we miss anything? Unlikely, since BMW has kitted out the new M6 to the extreme. Of course the portly weight (1850 kgs for the Coupe, with the Convertible a 100 kgs more) will means that it will face criticsm from purists and environmentalists alike, but BMW claim the Coupe will still return 10 km/l in the standard European driving cycle.
Top speed? Standard electronically limited to 250 km/h. If you opt for the 'M Driver's Package', the speed restrictions are removed, and the M6 is more than capable to taking you to the naughty side of 300 km/h.
Price? Rs 75 lakh in Europe, before you add import duties and taxes. No word on when, or if, BMW India will bring it here, but it doesn't seem likely for now.
