Ford Figo - Introduction

Almost two years since the Ford Figo was launched in India, the company decided to give its B segment hatchback a face-lift and launch its refreshed avatar just ahead of the upcoming festive season to cash in on the upbeat mood.

The company claims to have sold 2,35,000 units of the Ford Figo worldwide with India accounting for almost 60 per cent of the sales. The Ford Figo has been a good performer over the last two years and Ford claims to have made over 100 changes to make the good Figo better.

Ford India has launched the refreshed version of the Figo hatchback at the price point of Rs 3.85 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base petrol and Rs 4.82 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base diesel model.

We got behind the wheel of the Ford Figo 1.2 Petrol Titanium variant in a rather interesting midnight media drive which took us around the city that never sleeps – Mumbai. From Mount Mary Church, Haji Ali Dargah and Nariman Point to Flora Fountain, Asiatic Library and Gateway of India, we took the new Ford Figo almost everywhere. Read on to find out how it fared.

Ford Figo - Design & Engineering

The Ford Figo has always been a very sober looking car with clean lines and a balanced look. However, the new refreshed Figo gets a few tweaks to the exterior which adds character to the car and makes it more attractive.

The new Ford Figo adheres to Ford’s Kinetic Design language and gets a new front fascia with a hexagonal grill, redesigned headlamps with halogen bulbs and a larger reflective surface for better visibility, and new fog lamp housing. The design of the headlamp in particular is quite sporty and attracts attention. On the side, the Figo boasts of well pronounced wheel aches and the tail lights on the rear have been slightly touched upon to make it look more attractive.

figo exterior-details

The new Ford Figo is now available in two new colour options – Bright Yellow and Kinetic Blue – taking the colour scheme variety up to eight. The Bright Yellow colour scheme in particular looks very attractive and is sure to turn heads on the street. Personally, I felt that the colour looked great on the car’s surface, especially at night, and lends a very youthful and trendy look to the Figo.

Features such as body coloured front and rear bumpers comes as standard across model range. The ZXI and Titanium variants gets additional external features like body coloured outside mirrors and door handles, chrome finish radiator grill, side repeaters and tailgate applique. The Ford Figo Titanium variant that we tested also came fitted with new eight-spoke alloy wheels which definitely up the style quotient of the new Figo.

Ford Figo - Interiors & Comfort

Despite being a humble hatchback, the Ford Figo offers very good cabin space. The car has decent leg and head room for both front and rear passengers and can seat three medium built adults at the rear. The Ford Figo also has a 284 litre boot space which can easily accommodate two medium sized bags which might just prove adequate for your weekend trip.

The cabin is also quieter thanks to Ford’s new double bulb weather strips on the doors which help to fend off external noise and vibrations to some extent. The seats in the new Ford Figo are comfortable and provide good lumbar support. It comes with new seat fabrics which feature colour blocking technique which basically combines different colours and fabrics to create a unique one-of-a-kind combination.

The dash looks similar to the one in the earlier Ford Figo with the exception of new steering mounted audio controls, in a separate pod. These controls are only available in the Titanium variant. The air-conditioning in the Figo proved quite efficient and helped to maintain a comfortable cabin temperature, althought it was night time and hence not heavily taxed.

Creature comforts like AC with heater, power steering, remote fuel filler opener, day and night inside rear view mirror and 12V power point comes as standard across the model range. Additional features like fabric insert on door trims and removable parcel tray are available on the EXI, ZXI and Titanium trims. The ZXI and Titanium variants also get a MP3 player with USB, auxiliary input, radio and Bluetooth connectivity with four speakers.

Ford Figo - Performance & Handling

Figo track shot

The new Ford Figo is powered by the same 1.2-litre Duratec petrol engine which produces 71PS of maximum power at 6250 rpm and 102 Nm of peak torque at 4000 rpm. Under the hood of the diesel Figo is the 1.4 Duratorq  which pumps 69PS of maximum power at 4000 rpm and 160 Nm of peak torque at 2000 rpm.

There is no real difference in performance from the earlier Figo although Ford India claims it has improved engine calibrations for better pick up. The braking system in the Ford Figo is good with ventilated discs on the front and drums on the rear. The car handles well and boasts of good ride quality. With independent McPherson strut with dual path mounts suspension at the front and semi-independent twist beams with coil springs at the rear, the new Ford Figo swallowed the uneven and distressed patches without a hiccup.

new ford figo performance

The 1.2 Duratec Titanium that we tested felt refined but lacked power. A midnight drive meant ample opportunity to drive on empty thoroughfares, and the engine felt out of breadth every time we tried to extract some power out of the car. That said, we know from personal experience that the Figo petrol's performnce improves over time, especially after the second service when the car has run in properly.

Ford Figo - Fuel Efficiency

ford figo fuel efficiency mileage

The new Ford Figo claims an ARAI ratified fuel efficiency of 15.6 kmpl for the petrol variant and 20 kmpl for the diesel variant. Although, we didn’t get an opportunity to verify the claim, however, my interaction with Ford Figo owners have revealed that the petrol variant delivers about 10.5 kmpl and the diesel manages about 12.5 kmpl in the city with the AC.

Ford Figo - Safety

The new Ford Figo comes with standard safety features like three-point safety belt and lap strap for rear passengers. The mid-range EXI and ZXI variants come with additional safety features like the engine immoboliser and central locking. In addition, the Titanium variant that we tested came with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, fog lamps, rear defogger and rear wash and wipe.

Sudden braking of a car on slippery roads can be a very challenging and nerve wrecking task. If your wheels happen to lock up on wet and slippery roads or during a panic stop, then you may lose traction and control, causing your vehicle to spin, leading to fatal accidents. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) keep your wheels from locking up, so that your car maintains directional control during those sudden emergency braking.

In a country like India where we do experience a fair amount of rainfall and often require driving on slippery roads and graveled surfaces, essential safety features like ABS with EBD should be provided as standard across the model range. So the Ford Figo definitely scores a negative in this department and leaves enough room for improvement.

Ford Figo - Verdict

There is little doubt about the fact that the new Ford Figo is a very well balanced car. From its external appearance and interior space to handling and ride quality, the Figo scores good marks. At the price point of Rs 3.85 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base petrol and Rs 4.82 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base diesel model, the new Ford Figo is a value-for-model proposition and a practical choice for hatchback buyers.  The Ford Figo continues to be offered with a 2-year / 1, 00,000 km warranty. The only deterrent is perhaps the lack of power in the petrol motor. But overall, the new Ford Figo is a nice car to buy and should do well in the market.

Ford’s new Fiesta will be parachuted straight into the fire-fight of 2011 – the Battle of the Sedan. It brings enough ammo though, including the choice of petrol and diesel motors, voice-recognition technology, a blend of nimble handling and planted ride, and good looks.

Since the time I bought Ford Figo I forgot about other hatch back, really spacious and comfortable and value for money. Handling is very comfortable on highways it is sailing like boat. You will not regret your decision on this purchase.

I have been driving the Ford Figo for the past more than 3 years. It has proved to be value for money in the hatchback category. After having the desired fittings of alloy wheels it has a elegant appeal. There is ample of space to the seating capacity and it is comfortable. The pickup of the car to a high speed is within seconds and the mileage is very good. The looks of a aerodynamic body gives a bold impact. Definitely suits the economic budget with a comparison to other brand of cars in the same range.

i bought my green dragon figo :)it is an superb car....very smooth to drive and also very comfort feel. maintenance wise it is good.

by Parimal Sandhwar, 23

Very Cool Car. This car got all the features which makes is very demanding among this segment of car. It has style, look, features, safety and above all driving satisfaction.

by jagvinder, 23

this very good car for new generation.loking very nice.milaege is better than swift.pickup is fast.price is low

FIgo - Happiness as in Latin. One of the excellent car i have ever owned, I had previously Couple of M800 and Santro. Also i owned a Mondeo, Neon and ALtima while in US. But Figo changed the way i drive in India, I would give 5 start to the safety features of the car. I have been driving almost close to 4000 Kms a Month, It gives a pleasure of driving a luxury sedan. Fuel efficiency is 20+ in Highwasy and 15-16 in Chennai Hot traffic. I would say it is a value for Money.

Ford Figo is an excellent car in lowest price in its section, only drawback i found till now is, its a bit noisy than other car of its section.

I am a Figo owner since January 2013 and I proudly say that this is the best car which I could have possibly bought amongst so many choices available in market. Fit & finish, pickup, mileage, space, build quality, chilled A/C are some of the strong features of Figo. The lack of rear power windows even in the top version is a big let down. Another important armour in Figo's arsenal is the safety feature which was put to test in the initial days as I had a big accident in the Rajarhat Expressway. I escaped unscathed inspite of a big collision. After all this I can truly say, "Figo is my Guardian Angel"

by Soumya Roy, 18

the ford Figo I am using is a good performer. it has good interior, spacious, comfortable. Driving experience is very good as I myself drive and pick-up is ok. although the car is within warranty, but no problem given within this time. not much service centers are available and if you are not in a city, will face problem to find a service center.

by manish sutariya, 16

I don't want to compare this one to the other cars at the same price because no one is available in hatchback market with such huge space inside! Very good car and worth the money you spend on. It feels luxurious while you drive on. And comfort is the prime thing when you buy any car but before you would go for any decision I would recommend this one just to take look on it as it handles wide space with beautiful features like Bluetooth. simply the best, there are few cons in it like pickup time, mileage, but overall you will be satisfied with 1400 cc engine and high performance through various features. I have also checked the engine inside. its stunning and made to cover high performance on road. buy it, experience it and you love it!

by Rahul, 19

I've bought a figo zxi....it is a very good city car.it gives very decent mileage in city and highway.it has very large boot space and interior feels classy.i've owned a swift earlier but it has very small boot and mileage is not so good..figo gives a mp3 system it very rocking...i you want to buy a hatchback buy a ford figo, its very coool....

by Khushbu Agrawal, 04

One of the best in class- Unique combination of quality, substance and generous proportions used for interiors, good quality music system and nice pair of speakers, accomodation for 5 adults, rear boot that can pack anything right from shopping bags to the luggage for a weekend, drive is very powerful & amazing torque at lower speed, average safety and amazingly chilly AC at front side however customers are seeking for rear power window, alloy wheels, fog lamps and better after sales service. Mileage is about 21.68 km/ltr on highways and 18.5 km/ltr in city drive with AC on off mode. Overall its a complete value for money deal for a family... Its Figoing..

by Rajiv Philip, 30

A Big dream come true, owning Figo as my First Car, its Caring a s Friend, Concerned as a Mother, Loving as a Father, & always with me as God! The best part of Figo is the in built music system which rocks, and specially the white colour makes me feel royal!

by Jagdish Dharampurkar, 21

i bought my new Ford Figo EXI about 1 and half years ago. it is a good city car. very spacious and comfortable. but power sometimes feels less when 4 people are there and ac is on. the music system is best in class with very good sound quality. i like the all-black interiors although some of my family likes lighter interiors. seats are very nice also.

by Arunkumar R, 19

Figo gives all to a new car owner and am proud to own it. I learned my driving in my Figo and it gave me all comfort to learn it in ease. Good space to travel. Decent mileage both in city and highways. Good customer support post sales. Nice services and assistance. Simply to say Safer,Spacious, fast, reliable and worth for money.

by R.Seshadrinathan, 19

A Real "Go FREE" Car... Gives you the confidence on the road. A BIG SMALL car.. I have been driving cars for the last 20 years and truly this car makes you feel FREE in the B segment.... Free from tensions while driving in our Indian traffic conditions, free from the tension of spending thru your nose for fuel, Free from the tension of trying to get a parking space - this car gives you freedom in more ways than one. Excellent pickup, Boot space, braking, fuel efficiency, maneuverability, interior space- These are the greats of this car. Of course no car excepting probably in the luxury and super luxury segment can have all roses and feathers. The thorn is the ground clearance, rear manual windows and that too only half pull down ( gives a feel of our early days Fiat and Ambassador) and the purely functional interiors - No great beige and wooden finishes to give it a royal look inside. Of course these could be pardonable and the advantages more than outweigh these. An Enjoyable car to have...

by Naveen Arjunwadkar, 18

I bought the Figo Titanium diesel 4 months back. My previous car was Palio Stile SLX petrol. I like to travel long distances in my car. I found my previous car fit for purpose. However, I have not gone for a long distance trip in the Figo. Yet I find it has very good fuel efficiency in the city. I drive 60 kms daily. It has a very spacious boot and the power is the best part. It has the feel of a sedan.

by dussa vivek, 15

its better for smart local drive, fuel efficient, good service, and good interior design and spacious, and ride in joy

by Harmaan R A J Madon, 20

It was after plenty of deliberation that I settled for the Figo. In the end, the practicality it afforded and the sheer value-for-money swung the deal in favour of the Ford. My previous car was a Palio GTX, so what I miss the most is power. I wish Ford does a 1.6 version of the Figo. I'll be the first one to buy it!
