Chevrolet Enjoy - Introduction

Chevrolet Enjoy

General Motors (GM) India has launched the Chevrolet Enjoy MPV. The Enjoy is the third product from the company’s Chinese partner Shanghai Automotive Industries Corporation (SAIC) in the last six months. GM India has launched the Sail U-VA hatchback last November and the Sail sedan this February. The Chevrolet Enjoy will compete with the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the Nissan Evalia.

The company’s expectation is to touch about 3,500 units a month with the new Enjoy MPV. In comparison, Ertiga sells around 5,000-6,000 units every month, while Evalia is averaging a rather poor 232 units, as per data available with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

The base LS Chevrolet Enjoy diesel bears a price tag of Rs 6.94 lakh with the top-of-the-line LTZ trim being priced at Rs 8.22 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom Kolkata.

The Chevrolet Enjoy will be available in six colour options – Velvet Red, Switchblade Silver, Sandrift Grey, Linen Beige, Caviar Black and Summit White.

We got behind the wheel of the base Chevrolet Enjoy LS diesel and took it for a spin around town. Read on to find out how well it fared.

Chevrolet Enjoy - Design & Engineering

Chevrolet Enjoy

The Chevrolet Enjoy isn’t a great looking car and has got a rather boxy profile. Given its humble looks, chances are that it will rarely turn any heads on the road. So if you are the one who worships aesthetics, then the Enjoy wouldn’t really appeal to your senses. But despite all this, there are a few nice design elements like the styling line on the side that starts at the grille and runs along the entire length of the car. Also the ‘V’ on the bonnet looks smart and the line that runs from the front wheel arch to the rear helps to break up the mass of the tall body quite nicely. The big Chevrolet golden bow tie placed between the black slated front grille ensures that the Enjoy won’t be mistaken for anything other than a Chevy. The rear again is absolutely boxy in appearance while the 14-inch wheels seem too small for the bulky body. If you talk purely from the point of view of appearance then Enjoy’s arch rival – the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga will win hands down.

Unlike some of the other MPVs in this segment, the Chevrolet Enjoy is built on a lighter and more space-efficient, car-like monocoque chassis. Suspension set up comprises McPherson Struts on the front and multi-link coil spring on the rear and deliver good ride quality. Disc brakes doing duty on the front and drums on the rear do enough to promptly halt the car. Exterior noise does filter inside the passenger cabin leaving room for improvement in the NVH level.

Chevrolet Enjoy

The base diesel LS trim that we tested came with standard factory fitted features like body coloured front bumpers and chrome surround front grille.

Chevrolet Enjoy - Interiors & Comfort

Chevrolet Enjoy

The wide opening doors of the Chevrolet Enjoy ensure that getting in and out of this MPV is a hassle-free experience. Once inside the cabin, the first thing that strikes you about the Enjoy is its spacious and airy cabin. The high seating position of the seats means that visibility is great and the front seats also prove to be comfortable providing good all round support. However, the second and third row seating arrangement which although spacious enough to accommodate three adults, isn’t too comfortable with the benches being rather flat.

The dashboard is neatly laid out with the central console featuring easy to operate dials. The air conditioning is adequately powerful and manages to cool the cabin pretty well. In fact, a rear roof-mounted air conditioning vent for the second row is quite a noble thought. The base LS trim that we tested didn’t have a factory fitted music system so we can’t comment on the quality of the same.

Chevrolet Enjoy

The top-of-the-line LTZ variant comes with captain seats but they do not flip forward completely. Instead, there is a wide alley between them to reach the third row seats. However, the third row flips forward entirely providing enough luggage space as and when the need shall arise. However, the seatbelt points make the boot look messy. With all seats in the upright position, there’s just about enough space (195 litre) for either a big suitcase or two medium size soft bags and yet is it 30 litres more than its closest rival – the Ertiga.

Chevrolet Enjoy - Performance & Handling

Chevrolet Enjoy

The Chevrolet Enjoy diesel is powered by 1248cc 1.3-litre SMARTECH turbo-charged diesel engine manufactured in GM powertrain Talegaon near Pune. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and produces 77.5 PS of maximum power at 4000 rpm and churns out 188 Nm of peak torque at 1750 rpm. This is the same diesel motor which also does duty on the Chevrolet Sail U-VA hatchback and Chevrolet Sail sedan albeit in a different state of tune producing the same power but 17Nm of more torque in the Sail U-VA hatchback and Sail sedan. The diesel motor’s torque band is focused between 1,500rpm and 4,000rpm and the engine pulls in a smooth manner in this region. But the modest 77.5PS of power proves inadequate to move 1,345kg of kerb weight, hence acceleration isn’t very impressive. The Chevrolet Enjoy takes almost 21 seconds to travel from 0 to 100 kmph.

The Chevrolet Enjoy boasts of a good ride and surprises with rather impressive handling and drivability. Make no mistake, the Chevy MPV isn’t meant to be taken to the race track, however, despite its length and tall boy design, the Enjoy can keep to its track on a corner. The gearbox has a light action and the gears slot in easily. The steering is light but not very responsive. The 175/70 R15 JK tyres provide reasonable grip, although bigger tyres would have meant improved grip and better appearance. The car drives well and remains poised at high speed without losing its composure. Suspension set up is slightly on the softer side with bumps being absorbed quite well and the multi-link rear suspension results in better ride quality.

Chevrolet Enjoy - Fuel Efficiency

Chevrolet Enjoy

The Chevrolet Enjoy diesel claims an ARAI ratified fuel efficiency of 18.2kmpl and although we didn’t get an opportunity to perform a proper fuel efficiency test, however, 18.2kmpl will be a little difficult to achieve in congested city roads.

Chevrolet Enjoy - Safety

Chevrolet Enjoy

The Chevrolet Enjoy comes with safety features like door ajar warning lamp, driver seat belt reminder and child protector rear door locks as standard across model range. The top-of-the-line LTZ also gets more crucial features like ABS with EBD and driver and passenger side airbags.

Chevrolet Enjoy - Verdict

Chevrolet Enjoy

The Chevrolet Enjoy doesn’t have the looks but manages just fine as an MPV. The diesel engine feels robust and exterior finish is good. Both handling and ride quality are satisfactory. The interior looks slightly outdated (central console, AC knobs) and could be much better. So there is still room for improvement on that front. But if you are looking for a budget MPV (at Rs 6.94 lakh for base diesel, Enjoy is almost a lakh cheaper than the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga) which is genuinely spacious for accommodating seven or eight passengers, then the Chevrolet Enjoy can fit the bill.

chevrolet sail-u-va- Car Review by Experts

The low development cost base offered in China was something which could be leveraged very lucratively and that is how the Chevrolet Sail hatchback and sedan were pencilled in to GM’s India model strategy. The name Sail U-VA for the hatchback variant we’ve driven here (the sedan will come towards the end of 2012, or maybe early 2013), was something we’d exclusively confirmed back in May. The U-VA suffix is a nod to the earlier Aveo U-VA, which didn’t set sales charts on fire in India.
