maruti ertiga auto expo 2012

The Ertiga is based on the RIII concept pictured here, displayed at the 2010 Auto Expo.

The country's largest car-maker Maruti Suzuki India Ltd has confirmed that its new MPV Ertiga and a new Concept Compact SUV will be on display at the forthcoming Auto Expo in New Delhi in January 2012.

The Ertiga is based on the R3 concept that Maruti had displayed to showgoers at the last Auto Expo in 2010. The Ertiga draws styling cues from the Ritz hatchback, notably at the front, but it is an all new design, developed in India by Maruti's engineers. It will have three rows of seats, capable of seating 7 or 8 passengers.

The Ertiga will be powered by Maruti's new 1.4-litre K14 VVT petrol engine, with variable valve timing. There is also a diesel version, powered by the ubiquituous 1.3-litre Fiat-derived DDiS engine. The petrol engine is expected to produce between 105 - 110 PS of power, while the diesel engine puts out 90 PS.

The upcoming new Maruti Ertiga promises to have optimum space utilisation, with 7 seats in a compact wheelbase.

No pricing for either version has been announced yet, but we expect the base petrol model to start from approximately Rs 6.5 lakh, with the top-of-the-line diesel version retailing at close to Rs 9 lakh. At this price, Maruti will surely take on a lot of other players head-to-head, especially the UV players Tata and Mahindra.

Maruti will also display its new Concept Compact SUV, again based on the new Ertiga platform (itself derived from the SX4). This five/seven seat mini-SUV will share the same range of engines. Maruti says the concept went from design to prototype in a mere 9 months. Whether it is simply a mock-up like the R3 was at the last Expo, or a production ready prototype is anybody's guess at the moment. Four wheel drive will be on offer, along with higher ground clearance and steep advance and departure angles.

With the Ertiga / Compact SUV twins, Maruti is hoping to tap into another big market segment. The Maruti brand name and value-for-money and strong dealer network are established strenghts. The competition has been warned!
