mahindra great escape shillong

Shillong, the capital of the Indian state of Meghalaya, hosted more than 30 off-road enthusiasts who gathered there to participate in the Mahindra Great Escape. The Great Escape is an experiential marketing activity by Mahindra, and doubtless a smash-hit across the country. It brings together many different people from various walks of life, but it unites them with a common theme: the love of the outdoors, and a test of skill in their outdoor lifestyle vehicles.

A fair assumption would be that all the participants are driving Mahindras, and while that is mostly true, the event welcomes people with older, vintage off-roaders like the legendary Willys jeeps of yore. Of course, M&M owes much of its modern product line-up to its license-Raj heritage, when it made Willys jeeps under license in India. Still, it is charming to see these old, rugged vehicles still ply their trade, and successfully at that.

The venue of choice was significant too, since many of the hilly roads in Meghalaya and much of the north-east were carved by explorers driving jeeps. In fact, in some of the smaller towns and villages, access is still limited simply because roads do not permit. The only mechanized vehicles that can push through are invariably supplied by India’s best-known and much-loved utility vehicle manufacturer.
