The 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show is underway and presents an exciting range of new cars making their world and European debuts in Germany. From outlandish concepts and design studies to more mainstream production-ready vehicles, there are plenty of cars that were unveiled this year at Frankfurt. We have compiled a list of 10 cars which will surely bask in the limelight. Read on to find out more about these beauties on wheels.
Jaguar’s first ever sports crossover concept vehicle – the C-X17 – made its debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. Looking to the future, the C-X17 concept is a study to demonstrate the capabilities of the new advanced aluminium monocoque architecture. The C-X17 blends the sleek design and sporting performance that are hallmarks of Jaguar, with the crossover benefits of an assured driving position and high levels of flexibility. The C-X17 also showcases advanced interior technologies including Interactive Surface Console – a multi-screen infotainment network that links passengers with each other and the outside world through social media channels.
The Maserati Quattroporte Ermenegildo Zegna Limited Edition concept car features a new look with regard to colour scheme, materials and finish. The exterior of the Maserati Quattroporte Ermenegildo Zegna Limited Edition concept car features a special effect paint finish that simulates the fluidity and purity of metal, by using ultra-fine aluminium pigments. A gloss black primer amplifies the aluminium pigments and creates a sense of depth. On the inside, components such as seats, door panels and roof lining are finished in genuine soft leather. The interior of the Maserati Quattroporte Ermenegildo Zegna Limited Edition concept car also features classical hues like moka and greige are re-interpreted in a modern key to emulate Zegna's latest men's fashion collections, conveying a formal, sophisticated character. The car, presented as a limited edition concept, is intended for development into a production version in 2014 and will maintain the same look and quality of the current Quattroporte range.
A new Lexus mid-sized crossover concept, the LF-NX, has also made its world premiere at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). According to Lexus, this concept aims to explore the potential for a mid-sized crossover within the Lexus model range. The LF-NX crossover concept is powered by a new variant of the Lexus Hybrid Drive system tuned for SUV performance. The front of the Lexus LF-NX crossover concept features the Lexus spindle grille, lighting with independent Daytime Running Lights (DRL), and unique corner styling which separates the bumper from the front wing with a vertical cut. From the profile view, one can see the large arches over the wheels that are covered with a black protective finish. Also seen are a few sweeping character lines which run from front to back and low to high. At the rear, a cluster of angular taillights resides with more contoured lines and a stylized rear bumper. The concept is finished in brushed metal silver.
Bentley has announced the introduction of the Continental GT V8 S models available as both a coupe and convertible. Building on the success of the Continental GT V8, the new GT V8 S models feature a more powerful version of Bentley’s 4-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine developing 528 PS of maximum power at 6,000 rpm and 680 Nm of peak torque at a mere 1,700 rpm. The engine is mated to a close-ratio ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. Switch into S mode via the gear selector and the V8 S rewards the spirited driver with a sharpened throttle response while gears are held for longer with faster shifts.The GT V8 S coupe dispatches the 0 to 100 kmph sprint in just 4.5 seconds and boasts of a top speed of 309 kmph. The performance of the GT V8 S convertible reaches 100 kmph from a standing start in 4.7 seconds and has a top speed of 308kmph.
In celebration of the 30th birthday of the Sport quattro, Audi presented its successor at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. The Audi Sport quattro concept show car is set to continue the quattro tradition, with a coupe design and plug-in hybrid drive with a system output of 710PS. Like the Audi Sport quattro, the Audi Sport quattro concept was designed in the spirit of racing. Several features and functions pay homage to the quattro models of the early 1980s. These include the angular, flat C-pillars, ‘blisters’ above the fenders and the rectangular double headlights featuring Audi's Matrix LED technology, which will be available by the end of this year in the refreshed Audi A8. The plug-in hybrid drive makes the Audi Sport quattro concept a dynamic coupe. System output is 710PS and torque is 800 Nm. Power flows through a modified eight-speed tiptronic to the quattro powertrain, which features a sport differential on the rear axle. The electric motor is sandwiched between the combustion engine and the gearbox. The combustion engine is a four-litre, twin-turbo V8. It produces 568PS of power and 700 Nm of torque. The cylinder on demand (COD) system, which deactivates four cylinders under part load, and a start-stop system make the eight-cylinder unit very efficient.
Kia unveiled its new European concept Kia Niro at the 65th Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) in Frankfurt. The Kia Niro hints at a possible future B-segment contender and previewed a new powertrain. The car was designed at Kia’s Frankfurt design studio – less than a kilometre away from the IAA – under the direction of Gregory Guillaume, Chief Designer Europe. In a statement released to the press, Kia has stated, “Accepting any challenge that the assured modern motorist may throw at it, Niro combines a mischievous character in a clearly robust and substantial yet stylish bodyshape featuring a mix of contrasting materials – including stainless steel elements – in compact, purposeful dimensions.” Niro’s unveiling in Frankfurt is also being used as a platform to gauge potential customer response for future showroom models.
Japanese auto manufacturer Nissan has unveiled the new X-Trail at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. Sold as the Rouge in the US, the new Nissan X-Trail gets subtle changes in looks, features and riding capabilities and is set to go on sale globally in 2014. Nissan has remained tight lipped about the details pertaining to the powertrain. It is believed that this information will be revealed closer to the car’s official launch. However, both petrol and diesel engines options are expected, with 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes. The new X-Trail will be built on Renault-Nissan’s new Common Modular Platform.
"This new X-Trail builds on the reputation earned over three product generations for quality and reliability enhanced by class-leading levels of value, innovation, dynamic performance and premium style," said Nissan President and CEO, Carlos Ghosn. The new X-Trail will come equipped with features such as Nissan Safety Shield and the new fully integrated, NissanConnect navigation and infotainment system. Uphill Start Support, Advance Hill Descent Control, Active Ride Control and Active Engine Brake are the driver assists available.
Hyundai Motor has unveiled the New Generation i10 and claims that this model is designed, engineered and manufactured in Europe, for European buyers. “We’re offering consumers something truly unique in New Generation i10 – an A-segment car consumers want to buy, not one they feel they have to. It fully meets the rational needs of buyers in the cost-sensitive A-segment, yet delivers levels of comfort, driving pleasure and perceived quality from segments above,” said Mark Hall, Vice President of Marketing, Hyundai Motor Europe. The New Generation i10 has been designed and engineered at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre (HME TC) in Russelsheim, Germany, and is, for the first time, manufactured in the region, at the company’s recently-expanded plant in Izmit, Turkey.
The 458 Speciale is the latest offering from Ferrari’s stable. The sports car manufacturer from Maranello claims that the 458 Speciale represents the core philosophy of extreme technological innovation and research which, in this instance, has yielded powertrain, aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics advances that transform the already exceptional 458 Italia into a car genuinely worthy of the ‘Speciale’ moniker. Ferrari has now built its most powerful naturally aspirated V8 ever (605PS), the highest ever achieved by a road-going naturally aspirated Ferrari engine. The 458 Speciale can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in a mere 3.0 seconds and from 0 to 200 kmph in 9.1 seconds. The 458 Speciale also clocked a lap time of just 1:23.5 at the Fiorano Circuit.
German luxury car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the Concept S-Class Coupe at the ongoing 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. The S-Class Coupe will replace at CL-Class as the flagship model of the brand. Externally, the Mercedes-Benz Concept S-Class Coupe's flowing profile features the German car maker’s signature dropping line, an elongated hood, a crouched greenhouse and a high beltline. Other body design features include accentuated wheel arches over 21-inch wheels, a dome-shaped stretched roofline, frameless doors and a window area uninterrupted by the B pillar. A large, aggressive-looking grille, adorned with dark rectangular elements, dominates the front end and frames the Mercedes star emblem; LED-running headlights further define the coupe's face. Muscular lines running along the side gives the car a macho and stylish look and feel. The rear-wheel driven Concept S-Class Coupe is powered by a V8 biturbo engine. This engine produces 462PS from a displacement of 4,663 cc and 700 Nm of peak torque.
