I find a few cars launched recently like Polo, Micra have 3 cylinders, why?

Dear Deep, You hav made a very interesting obsrvation! Yes, many small hatchbacks today have a three-cylinder engine. The reason for this is simple: car manufacturers today design "modular" engines, which have the same basic architecture, but by changing the number of cylinders, they can change the displacement of the engine and use it across different models. As an example, consider the Polo has a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine, whereas the Vento has a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine. By using a similar architecture like bore and stroke, cylinder spacing, valve layout and camshaft design, the companies can thus reduce both their development cost and parts inventory.
